When understanding is not enough.
A reflection on the distance between knowing a pattern and living differently.
Knowing and experiencing
You may be able to describe a familiar pattern with remarkable clarity: the moment you withdraw, the conversation you avoid, the expectation you bring into a room. And still, the next time it happens, knowing can feel far away.
A different question
Instead of asking why you have not changed yet, you might become curious about what is happening in the moment itself. What feels at stake? What are you hoping to protect? What would you want someone else to understand about your response?
Making room for complexity
An explanation is one way of approaching experience. There can also be room for emotion, sensation, uncertainty and the history of a relationship. None of these needs to be forced into a neat answer.
A question to take with you
Think of a situation you understand well but still find difficult. If you set the explanation aside for a moment, what part of the experience has not yet had much room?
These reflections are offered for general exploration. They do not replace individual psychological care.
